Tout le monde a déjà vu une photo de la célèbre Paris Hilton, avec ses vêtements griffés et, dans son sac, un nouvel accessoire-mode: un petit chien tout habillé. C'est une des premières vedettes d'Hollywood à l'avoir rendu «glamour».

Le chien est depuis devenu un accessoire de mode de plus en plus en vogue. «Pour plusieurs, des filles surtout, c'est une extension de leur style, explique Lucy Medeiros, qui a créé des vêtements pour La Senza pendant une dizaine d'années avant d'ouvrir son atelier de mode canine à Boucherville. Le chien leur permet de démontrer d'une autre façon qui elles sont, leur goût, leur perception de la mode. Pour certaines, c'est aussi une manière de remplacer un enfant qu'elles n'ont pas.»

Habiller son chien est aussi une manière d'exhiber son statut social. «Certains propriétaires aiment ça quand leur petit chien est bien habillé, bien toiletté et qu'il les représente, détaille Suzelle Bolduc, qui conçoit des vêtements pour chiens depuis 2006 à Laval, sous l'étiquette Azoudog. Ils aiment beaucoup que leur animal attire l'attention, que les gens s'intéressent à la provenance de ses vêtements. Habiller un chien reste un luxe. Ce n'est plus comme autrefois; nous ne sommes plus à l'époque où les chiens vivaient dans des niches.»
Un marché en pleine expansion

Et le créneau de la mode pour chiens est en pleine expansion, si on se fie aux acteurs du milieu. «La mode animale a connu une plus grande popularité au cours des dernières années et devrait continuer de faire des adeptes, prévoit Suzelle Bolduc. Ça va avoir un effet boule de neige. Ici, au Québec, on pense que c'est un phénomène récent, mais ça existe depuis plusieurs années, surtout en Europe et aux États-Unis.»

Il y a d'ailleurs à New York une semaine uniquement dédiée à la mode pour animaux de compagnie, la Pet Fashion Week New York, où tous les designers se succèdent pour présenter les nouvelles tendances de l'industrie.

Un avis que partage la designer derrière Roxy and Lulu-Urban Doggie Wear, Mme Medeiros. «Plus on voit de chiens à la mode, plus on va l'accepter, croit-elle. On devrait en apercevoir de plus en plus dans les prochaines années. Alors qu'avant c'était plus pour faire une blague, c'est maintenant devenu une tendance qui est là pour rester.» Mme Medeiros prévoit d'ailleurs engager un employé, tellement la demande est forte.

Même constat dans les magasins spécialisés. «Avec la hausse de popularité des petits chiens, il se vend de plus en plus d'accessoires mode, estime André Lemonde, gérant chez Elphège Grenier à Belœil. Nous avons beaucoup de demandes pour ce genre d'objets, notamment pour les sacs frontaux ou en bandoulière pour transporter les petits chiens près du corps.»

La gamme de produits offerts va aussi se transformer, pour coller encore plus à l'offre qui existe actuellement pour les êtres humains. «Tout ce qui existe en ce moment pour les humains existe ou va exister dans les prochaines années pour les animaux», constate Lucy Medeiros. Il faut donc prévoir l'apparition sur les tablettes de bikinis pour chiens, de perruques, et de bien d'autres accessoires qui se coordonneront à ceux du propriétaire. Certains parlent même de boucles d'oreilles pour animaux.
Mise en garde

Avec la transformation du chien en accessoire de mode, le risque est grand de voir certaines personnes s'acheter un joli toutou pour le placer dans leur sacoche et l'abandonner une fois la mode passée. «Il faut respecter l'animal et toujours considérer que c'est un être vivant», met en garde Mme Bolduc.

«Ce n'est pas un jouet. Un chien demande du temps, des soins et de l'argent. C'est un contrat à long terme; il faut penser qu'après deux ou trois mois, si vous êtes tanné d'avoir votre animal, vous ne devrez pas aller le porter à la SPCA, mais continuer d'en prendre soin», ajoute-t-elle.

Pet Fashion week is an industry trade show held at the Metropolitian Pavillion in NYC, it is a great venue showcasing awesome luxury brand pet products. The show is only open to industry buyers and media and not to the public. Sorry!

For those of you who don't know, I exhibited at the show launching my first pet clothing line Roxy and LuLu "Urban Doggie Wear" in 2008. Actually I was pretty excited and a little nervous with this being my "first" public appearance. Before my pet clothing line came to life, I was primarily know for designing Swarovski crystal pet collars which are all hand made collars catering to all different size pooches.

This year I decided not to exhibit, but instead attended as a visitor with
my dear friend Tania who is the owner of Poochie Glam, (a luxury pet SPA in Laval catering to small and mid size dogs).

The moment we walked in the door up the staircase, we immediately found ourselves in a world of pet bliss with the caramel hard wood flooring and white drapes separating all the vendors not to mention all the beautiful product lines.

As we walked a little further into the room, it was literally 3 minutes when I heard someone call my name. It was my dear friend Rose, mommy to Penny Lane and Lily Pads (who you see in the above photos) I was so excited to see her and her girls! Even though we keep in contact through email, telephone and facebook, I haven't seen her in person since 2008.
Not only was I ecstatic to reconnect with her, I was proud to see her girls wearing my R&L glam dresses! More so, Zara and Gianna, a friends 2 cavalier king charles spaniels were also strutting around the venue in R&L damask harness dresses from my Haute Couture Collection. Right then and there, I have to say this made my day and this was just minutes entering the venue.

Of course it wasn't too long before I felt like a celeb with a large gathering of NY friends with their celeb pups that I had also met 2 years prior, totally surrounding us like paparazzi. We kissed and hugged and took tones of pictures for our scrap books. I was extremely pleased to see all these old friends and met quite a few new ones in person, whom I had already connected with through Facebook. Among these wonderful people are, Rose Russo (mommy to celeb pups Penny Lane & Lily Pads from America's Next Top Dog, The Princess), Rick Caran (daddy to Little Jilli dog, the famous poker playing pup), J Mikel Sacher, owner of FUR, Marie, (mommy to Bocker Labradoodle, a pup who can be found all over the media), Ada Nieves who is into just about everything and been seen on the Martha Stewart show (also mommy to 5 little chi's and a kitty), and Karen Biehl (mommy to the famous Milk Bone dog, Eli)

As the day moved on, we got to visit and chat with a lot of vendors, some old and quite a few new ones and got to see first hand all the new products coming out for the Fall 2010 season. By the end of the day we were hungry and wiped out, ready to hit a restaurant and a good glass of wine!

All in all it was an awesome day once again. I look forward to seeing my pawsi soon when I return to NYC in the near future!

April 2010....What a Fabulous month!!!

If the month of April is any indication of where business is headed for us, then we (roxy & lulu) are in for a great future in the pet fashion industry.

This past month I have been incredibly busy designing and developing a brand new line of "Haute Couture" pet apparel that has revolutionized my approach to design and will become our trademark as I plan to expand and build around this whole NEW concept. One, that has never been seen anywhere else before!
Sorry, I can't elaborate on it right now, but stick around to find out what the hype is all about, as I will be launching the collection in the coming weeks!!

As mentioned before, April has been an incredibly exciting and busy month here at R&L headquarters. Besides preparing for the new collection launch, we have been filling orders for distribution to 5 NEW Retailers across Europe, USA and Canada! Pffft...Not bad for a months work!!! Retailers are calling us requesting to carry the R&L brand. Hard work does pay off! : )

Even more so, I am pleased to mention that R&L is getting recognition and distribution in our own back yard, in Quebec, Canada....Go Canada go!!

So to feed my passion, my mission continues.....to design trendy and fun innovative pet wear that satisfies the palette of the fashion savvy pet parent! Always staying true to my design style!

MONTREAL WORLD VEGAN DAY FASHION SHOW & CHARITY FUNDRAISER

We were honored to be part of the 3rd Annual "Montreal World Vegan Day Fashion Show" which took place on November 1, 2009 at La Tulipe in Montreal. In collaboration with "CARA" Concordia Animal Rights Association, raising awareness against cruelty to all animals was the goal of this charity fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the SPCA's fight against puppy mills in Quebec.

The evening was launched with Nat Lauzon (Montreal Virgin Radio 96) behind the microphone as show host. With the help of all the volunteers who gave their time and services,, NHL Hockey players, TV and Movie celebrities, generous donations and silent auction, numerous funds were raised to aid the SPCA's battle in helping the souls that don't have a voice to be heard.

By raising awareness we can all make a difference one person at a time, when we open our hearts and eyes in how we choose to live our lives.

We can not change what we do not acknowledge, but now that we are aware, it is time to speak and take a stand for the those who do not have a voice to speak for themselves!

Roxy and Lulu, a Canadian doggie wear and accessory company, offers "Animalistic Bling" in their Urban Jungle collars. These hand set collars and leads are made with genuine Swarovski Crystals.

The Canadian designer, Lucy Medeiros, has a strong background in fashion design. She had a children's wear company before starting Roxy and Lulu in 2006. The company was inspired by her little blonde yorkie, Roxie. Lulu is a name Lucy was called herself as a child.

We tried out the pink camouflage crystal collar in the 16" size. This is one gorgeous collar that is sure to turn heads. It has classic luxury appeal and has been seen on celebrity dogs, Leroy and Star, on the CBS show, "Greatest American Dog."

Since each collar is hand set by Lucy herself, no two designs are exactly alike. The buckle has crystal detail that matches the main design. In addition to the pink that we tried, Roxy and Lulu offers different colors as well as tiger, leopard and zebra crystal designs.

These posh collars come in sizes that would fit a very small teacup dog to large that would fit a Saint Bernard. Glam is for dogs of all sizes! No one need miss out on having a something extra pretty to wear.

This is such a stunning collar, you may just want to wear it yourself as a choker. I did. Matching leads are also available.

There are three collections that Roxy and Lulu carries in the Swarovski crystal collars; Urban Jungle, Birthstone Glam and Trendy Posh.

The bonding glue that is used to affix the crytals to the collar is very strong, but if you do lose a crystal or two, a few extra are included.

The First Family reveals the "First Pup's" breed and arrival date!

In an exclusive interview with People magazine, First Lady Michelle Obama reveals, the upcoming arrival of the First Dog to be sometime in April.

During the campaign, the Obamas promised their two girls, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, a dog, win or lose. The Family has paid serious consideration to rescuing a dog from a shelter.

The First Lady said she favors Portuguese Water Dogs, although, as of last month, the family was still considering a Labradoodle as a possibility.

"Temperamentally they're supposed to be pretty good dogs", says Mrs. Obama." From a size perspective, they're sort of in the middle — not too small, and not a huge dog either. the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that's where we're leaning."

The first couple and their two daughters have been going back and forth on possible names, with the girls suggesting names like Frank and Moose.

Now, that The First Family has decided on the breed, they appear to be in serious negotiations over names.

The First Pup's target arrival date is in April, after the family's spring break vacation, March 20-29.

Ever since President-elect Barack Obama announced in his victory speech that his daughters Malia 10, and Sasha 7, would be getting a new puppy once settled in to the White House, interest in the subject of the First Puppy exploded. After much talk and anticipation, President-elect Barack Obama and the family have finally narrowed their search down to two breeds, either a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water dog.

First Presidential Puppy....closing in on a breed!

The suspence is almost over! The word is out that President-Elect Obama announced the family has narrowed their search for their First-Puppy between a Portuguese Water Dog or a Labradoodle. Both are good candidates for someone with allergies, such as his 10-year-old daughter Malia.
All that remains now, is to wait for the right dog to appear at a shelter. We should learn more after the Inauguration January 20.
My personal favorate is the Portuguese Water Dog.....and why not? We both come from a Portuguese background!
I'll keep you posted!!
