With warm earth tones and tailored to Fit with perfection, this opulent coat is constructed of a supple Faux Fur Zebra embossed body with a fully wrapped Feathered Fur collar. The waist is enhance with a rich ruby and crystal stone belt detail. Lined in a matching Leopard interior, it is finished off with a velcro closure around the neck and belly. Gucci ou Chanel?

Tout le monde a déjà vu une photo de la célèbre Paris Hilton, avec ses vêtements griffés et, dans son sac, un nouvel accessoire-mode: un petit chien tout habillé. C'est une des premières vedettes d'Hollywood à l'avoir rendu «glamour».

Le chien est depuis devenu un accessoire de mode de plus en plus en vogue. «Pour plusieurs, des filles surtout, c'est une extension de leur style, explique Lucy Medeiros, qui a créé des vêtements pour La Senza pendant une dizaine d'années avant d'ouvrir son atelier de mode canine à Boucherville. Le chien leur permet de démontrer d'une autre façon qui elles sont, leur goût, leur perception de la mode. Pour certaines, c'est aussi une manière de remplacer un enfant qu'elles n'ont pas.»

Habiller son chien est aussi une manière d'exhiber son statut social. «Certains propriétaires aiment ça quand leur petit chien est bien habillé, bien toiletté et qu'il les représente, détaille Suzelle Bolduc, qui conçoit des vêtements pour chiens depuis 2006 à Laval, sous l'étiquette Azoudog. Ils aiment beaucoup que leur animal attire l'attention, que les gens s'intéressent à la provenance de ses vêtements. Habiller un chien reste un luxe. Ce n'est plus comme autrefois; nous ne sommes plus à l'époque où les chiens vivaient dans des niches.»
Un marché en pleine expansion

Et le créneau de la mode pour chiens est en pleine expansion, si on se fie aux acteurs du milieu. «La mode animale a connu une plus grande popularité au cours des dernières années et devrait continuer de faire des adeptes, prévoit Suzelle Bolduc. Ça va avoir un effet boule de neige. Ici, au Québec, on pense que c'est un phénomène récent, mais ça existe depuis plusieurs années, surtout en Europe et aux États-Unis.»

Il y a d'ailleurs à New York une semaine uniquement dédiée à la mode pour animaux de compagnie, la Pet Fashion Week New York, où tous les designers se succèdent pour présenter les nouvelles tendances de l'industrie.

Un avis que partage la designer derrière Roxy and Lulu-Urban Doggie Wear, Mme Medeiros. «Plus on voit de chiens à la mode, plus on va l'accepter, croit-elle. On devrait en apercevoir de plus en plus dans les prochaines années. Alors qu'avant c'était plus pour faire une blague, c'est maintenant devenu une tendance qui est là pour rester.» Mme Medeiros prévoit d'ailleurs engager un employé, tellement la demande est forte.

Même constat dans les magasins spécialisés. «Avec la hausse de popularité des petits chiens, il se vend de plus en plus d'accessoires mode, estime André Lemonde, gérant chez Elphège Grenier à Belœil. Nous avons beaucoup de demandes pour ce genre d'objets, notamment pour les sacs frontaux ou en bandoulière pour transporter les petits chiens près du corps.»

La gamme de produits offerts va aussi se transformer, pour coller encore plus à l'offre qui existe actuellement pour les êtres humains. «Tout ce qui existe en ce moment pour les humains existe ou va exister dans les prochaines années pour les animaux», constate Lucy Medeiros. Il faut donc prévoir l'apparition sur les tablettes de bikinis pour chiens, de perruques, et de bien d'autres accessoires qui se coordonneront à ceux du propriétaire. Certains parlent même de boucles d'oreilles pour animaux.
Mise en garde

Avec la transformation du chien en accessoire de mode, le risque est grand de voir certaines personnes s'acheter un joli toutou pour le placer dans leur sacoche et l'abandonner une fois la mode passée. «Il faut respecter l'animal et toujours considérer que c'est un être vivant», met en garde Mme Bolduc.

«Ce n'est pas un jouet. Un chien demande du temps, des soins et de l'argent. C'est un contrat à long terme; il faut penser qu'après deux ou trois mois, si vous êtes tanné d'avoir votre animal, vous ne devrez pas aller le porter à la SPCA, mais continuer d'en prendre soin», ajoute-t-elle.
